Ask 5 different people for advice, and you’ll get 5 different answers… Not knowing a whole lot about the L-series myself, I have to rely on advice from experienced people. As I get more advice, I get more uncertain about which way to go with the engine rebuild. Right now I’m debating about wether to go with stock crank/rods and high comp pistons, or to go for a 2,5 stroker kit, long rods and higher compression. Either way, I’m hoping to only rebuild this engine once, so I want to get it right the first time. Descisions, descisions… What would you do?

What compression ratios are you considering building for?
The word around the boards is that you can get more out of your motor by utilizing a moderate compression ratio with more advance in timing.

I aim for a nice balance between the two.

My L28 is going to be around 9.2-9.4:1 which is almost a full point higher than the stock 8.5:1 ratio. I “Think” this will be a decent compromise so I can advance timing to fully realize my motors’ potential, but as I bet you can guess, this is purely theoretical since the cooling on the back end of the L-series heads is so bad.

Well, right now, I’m considering about 10:1, and a little valve unshrouding will probably reduce that a little bit. I’m no engine builder, but I guess to maximize the potential of a hotter cam, you’ll need higher compression.. I’m a little considered about valve – piston clearance, though, but that might not be an issue.. I have to go back to reading, hehe.
